On September 15, 2009 the California Department of Education published the Academic Performance Index (API) data for all California public schools based on the May 2009 standardized test results. Academia Avance increased its base API score by 25 points, rising to 726, and exceeded all of its Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) state and federal accountability benchmarks. This follows the 89 point increase from the year before, and places Avance ahead of all the traditional public middle and high schools in Northeast Los Angeles.

Avance students outperformed or matched the LAUSD district-wide STAR scores in 14 of 16 comparison points, and the 10th grade students surpassed the state-wide STAR scores for Science and History: an incredible 79% scored Proficient or Advanced in Science; 61% scored Proficient or Advanced in History.

These results come on the heals of the CDE publication of the 2008 school rankings based on 2008 STAR results. When compared to 100 schools in the state with similar demographic characteristics, Avance was in the 9th decile.

The performance of 2008 and 2009 will propel Avance forward in 2010 on our way to the first graduating class in the Spring of 2011. Stayed tuned!
